Drive down Ocean Avenue toward Carmel Bay.
Turn Left On Scenic Road.
Two residential blocks until (at 8th Avenue) Scenic Road lives up to its name and indeed becomes "scenic"
Drive slowly and carefully because the road will get narrower and narrower.
There is a very narrow and very sharp turn at Carmel Point - it's almost a "U" turn:

After Carmel Point you will see a parking lot (on the right) for
Carmel Lagoon and Wetlands National Reserve:
aka Carmel River State Beach:

There are toilets in the free parking lot.
Scenic Road turns into Carmelo Street.
Take Carmelo Street to Santa Lucia Avenue.
Right on Santa Lucia Avenue to the end.
Decision time . . .
IF you want to go back to downtown Carmel
turn left on Junipero and go to Ocean Avenue.
IF you want to go to the historic Carmel Mission
turn right on Rio Road
IF you want to go to Clint Eastwood's historic Mission Ranch
turn right on Rio Road
IF you want to go to Highway1
turn right on Rio Road
pass the Mission and keep going to the traffic light
at which point it is decision time again . . .
If you want to go NORTH to
Monterey or Santa Cruz or San Francisco
turn LEFT.
If you want to go SOUTH to
Point Lobos (well worthwhile)
Big Sur or Hearst Castle or
Santa Barbara or Los Angeles
turn RIGHT.
