Cenotaph

At the Carmel Mission, adjacent to the Basilica, the Jo Mora Chapel Gallery contains the Serra Memorial Cenotaph, sculpted of travertine marble and bronze by Jo Mora in 1924 - 140 years after Serra's death.


A cenotaph is an empty tomb.

Father Junipero Serra is actually buried beneath the floor near the altar in the main sanctuary of the mission.
